New Jersey Nursing CE Requirements

Total Hours Required: 30

Elective Hours: 29

Renewal Cycle in Years: 2

All RN licenses expire May 31st every other year.

For renewal, RNs must complete:

  • All RNs in the State of New Jersey who wish to maintain an active license are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education for license renewal.
  • For initial licensure, RNs must complete: 1 hour of organ and tissue donation
  • For license renewal, RNs must complete: 1 hour of prescribing opioids

  • Describe the principles of patient safety, medical errors, and ethical decision-making in healthcare, including the legal definition of nursing negligence, charting practices, and balancing harms associated with pain treatment.
  • Recognize the importance of infection prevention and control, including the chain of infection, transmission of infectious organisms, and standard infection prevention practices.
  • Recall the unique needs and considerations for special populations, including older adults, LGBTQ+ healthcare recipients, and patients experiencing homelessness, including risk factors, warning signs, and effective interventions.
